Need more convincing? Your membership fee actively contributes to a better world through 1% For The Planet, plus all our video content will be captioned to promote inclusive learning. A place for all of us.
We operate a closed membership which means we open for new members a few times throughout the year. This way we can keep our quality high and our technology smooth. We are currently closed to new members, to focus on our existing members and grow our service. You can add your name to the waiting list to be the first to know when we reopen.
Every month, The Table members will receive content to spark creativity, learn from experts, increase sewing skills and join a global community of like-minded makers. Your membership fee contributes to a better world for all: we are a business member of 1% For The Planet, actively contributing part of our income to environmental causes. Your membership in a nutshell:
Founders Caroline and Alexandra are the owners of Selkie Patterns, a startup selling dressmaking patterns, sustainable lifestyle patterns, e-books and textiles. Proudly plastic-free and awarded the Eco-Age Brandmark in only their first year of trading. They are also the authors of bestselling book The Great British Sewing Bee: Sustainable Style, establishing themselves as experts in their field. Sharing a costume background, Alexandra is a designer with experience in design for theatre, working backstage in some of the world’s nest known musical theatre shows, and working with styling and customer experience for high end retail brands. Caroline worked freelance as a costume maker for shows such as Hamilton, the London Olympics, well-loved ballet shows and BAFTA-winning film The Favourite. Alexandra teaches kids’ sewing classes in London and Caroline teaches costume at University of the Arts London. Together they have over twenty years of professional design and sewing experience.
It means you can’t join the membership at just any point throughout the year; only when we open the doors. This is so that we can make sure we can accommodate everyone in terms of our team and also the technical side of running the membership. If we need to upgrade or expand any of our digital facilities, we can do so when the doors are closed so you won’t experience any difficulties when you join. It ensures we can offer quality content and really deliver what we promise.
You sign up to be a member or sign up to the waiting list. When your membership starts you pay a monthly fee in return for monthly updated content in mostly video format. You will always have access to the content so you can go at your own pace.
No, we don’t currently offer a free trial.
We are working on this!
In order for us to create high quality content that is of value to you, we need to remain a financially viable business. The content takes time and money to prepare, film, edit and produce and running a members’ area takes a big time commitment ‘backstage’. You will get new content every month, presented by experts, which we think is worth the money.
You will need Facebook to join our community forum, yes! If you are not bothered by joining the community (although we think you should!) then you won’t need Facebook.
The name refers to the space used for sewing, pattern drafting, crafting, creating. And we wanted something that would symbolise a level playing field for everyone involved: all seats at a table are equal.
There will be no homework and the only computer skills you need is to press play!
The Table is run by the same founders as Selkie Patterns, operates under the same business and with the same values.
If you are a woman, or you make garments with a bust-waist-hip, the membership will be perfect for you!
The content of the membership is created by two women who specialise in pattern cutting and design for womenswear. The pattern masterclasses focus on pattern cutting, hacking and fitting of garments that are cut with a bust-waist-hip. If this describes your body, then the content will suit you. Our other content is formed by interviews with professional creative women, tutorials, and exclusive products that are suitable for anyone who is interested in that.
We commit to delivering quality and support for you as a member, and as such, we cannot commit to teaching menswear as that is not our expertise as owners of the platform. That’s the reason we do not market our platform towards men or people who make garments with chest-waist-hip, as we couldn’t deliver the quality support we’ve committed to.
There is content to enjoy if you can’t sew, like interviews and non-sewing tutorials, but the majority of the tutorials and masterclasses are sewing orientated.
The Masterclasses and Tutorials have a difficulty rating of 1-4, which is displayed before you start watching, so you can choose what’s right for you.
You can cancel straight away! Payment is taken as soon as you complete registration and then at the beginning of each new month.
The subscription is £17.99 per month from December 2020.
We will offer a few spots at a lower price during our second launch. You will be able to send us an email then, telling us why you think you would benefit from this initiative. We don’t want financial situations to stop potential members from joining, as we all have something different to contribute regardless of our finances, and at the same time we need to be able to operate our business.
Each month we upload new content to the platform: a Masterclass, a Tutorial, we host a Q&A in the community forum with any questions or dilemmas you have sent us throughout that month, and the fourth piece of content changes: interviews with inspiring creative women, exclusive products like a print, a discount to an event or other independent business or a making-of video.
Yes! And then you can watch it whenever you like.
Yes! Once any content is uploaded to the platform, it will stay there and you can access it whenever you like.
It’s an organisation where businesses and individuals can become members to give to environmental non-profits. Businesses give 1% of their profits to a non-profit partner of their choice. 1% For The Planet facilitates this but the giving is directly between the business and the non-profit. 1% of your membership fee with The Table will be given to environmental causes in this way.
